On the dashboards -> topology page there is a check box labeled 'Realtime'. It is always checked by default.
What does this do? To me it just makes a mess of the whole display and I always turn it off to get a clearer picture of the sensors and nodes that are 'up'.
Can it be set so default is not checked?

No, default it is enabled.
Realtime: shows original connection status, used to see a chain of nodes connected
if disabled, just link all the nodes to gateway directly
